And we are discussing tonight the 1985

film To Live and Die in L.A

We got a chance to make him on a hand to hand body.

You can't come up with the front money.

You're not for real

directed by William Friedkin, when his longtime

partner on the force is killed, a reckless U.S. Secret Service agent,

Richard Chance, vows's revenge, setting out

to nab dangerous counts counterfeit artist Eric Masters, played by Willem Dafoe.

Alan, you chose this movie?

Tell us, why did you choose to live and die in LA?

Well, it's like, first off, it's just when those

movies that, you know those types of movies where it's like you've always heard of them, but you've never seen them.

It was one of those

Obviously, I live in L.A. And

then like kind of a very specific thing that happened that was funny is my

neighbor, you know, this was a couple months ago.

My neighbor asked me

said that there was like a show where they

were doing where like, what's the Wang Chong, right?

That's the band that that did the music for it?

I believe so..

Yeah, yeah.

Yeah.

So they were like, he pitched it to me as that they were doing a screening of the movie

and Wang Chung was playing the soundtrack with it.

And I was like, I was like, oh, hell yeah, let me go, let me go to that.

And then I went and really it was more of like a just

straight up Wang Chang played all the music from the movie,

but they just kind of like, it was a, it was like a concert. like

they had some like videos and they played some even kind of behind the scenes stuff.

But

but it wasn't at all what I thought.

I thought I was going to see the movie.

And so when this came up, I was like, I still haven't seen the movie.

Let me, like this this will, this will give me a reason and I actually will have to watch it.

And I'm I'm glad I did.

What was your perception of this movie prior to watching it?

And then how did that change?

I knew that it was

I mean, I know I kind of have a working idea of

William Frekin in that he's like kind of like, what, new

Hollywood, like asshole like guy.

And so I knew it would be crazy.

I knew Will Dafoe was in it, so I knew it would be like

awesome.

And I knew, I knew it was like a kind of like,

you know, like heat or like I knew it was like a crime thriller thing.

And I always, I, whether it's like a noir from like

the 30s or like collateral or like what, like, I always love all that shit.

Like I, so, and especially in LA and, and, um,

also like the aesthetic of it, like,

um, that was something I kind of knew going in

and didn't really change, but I was,

I was like, God, that is like how LA looks on like

a, like, when it is really smoggy and hot.

Like, that is what it looks like.

That is how it feels

So, yeah.

Yeah.

Would you say that this movie

walked so that movies like Heat could run?

Yeah, I mean, it's interesting because it's

so like, I mean, we'll get into it.

It's kind of a fucking mess.

Like, you know, and like in a good way, like in like a really fun way

Um, but yeah, I can, I

would say that it's a like, maybe a proto version

of that or like a rougher Around the edges.

I mean, in a way, it really reminded me a lot of, um,

it reminded me a lot of like, what was that, like the late 70s Gene Hackman stuff.

Oh, it reminded me of Connection.

Yeah, it reminded me of that a lot.

There's actually one guy in this movie that kind

of resembled Gene Hackman in a way, too.

Yes.

I forget what that character's name is, but he like appeared really

quick and I was like, he kind of looks familiar, but not quite at the same time.

No, I don't.

Totally.

Yeah, exactly.

And it was funny too, because like both both of those movies have a

is that the one, is that the Gene Hamme one with like, like clumsy car chases?

Like I like a clumsy car chase. like it's

like you're like this is actually what the car chase would look like in real life.

I love the LA bridges that go over the LA River.

That's such a vibe, don't you think?

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

I know they didn't they demolish some of the OG bridges?

They redid the Sixth Street bridge, and then like they almost had to like immediately

close it because there was like tons of

like, um, people go out there and do donuts and shit

and like car meetups and stuff like that.

But it's funny.

It's like I live right next to the the one that goes over the bridge at

Hyperion.

And it's like, I was just watching Roger Rabbit the other day and I was like, oh shit, that's the bridge.

I'm like I walk on like all the fucking time.

Yeah.

But yeah, I love all those old bridges and shit.

I think LA is such a character.

I think it's slept on a little bit because New York seems to get a lot of radio play.

Totally.

I need to see more stuff in L.A. I need to see more of those bridges and dams and whatnot.

Well, and it reminded me a lot of

because like they do a lot of stuff editing around the ports

and and the river, like those concrete, like the concrete

riverbed or whatever I'm going to say.

But I was like, a lot was like, I was like, oh, this is definitely where a lot

of the Terminator 2 stuff like, like comes from.

I was thinking the same.

Willem Dafoe, John Turturo, there's such babies in this movie.

Turturo's is insane.

Yeah, it's crazy.

He's like a little guy.

Yeah.

He's like a young guy. was, I don't I

don't know the history here, but do you guys guys know, like, was Will Dafoe known to be a bad guy up to this point?

Was that kind of his Biwick or was this like the start of his like sort of bad guy career?

Wasn't he like

was his first big thing?

Wasn't he Jesus?

Or was he?

Oh, that was a Scorsese movie.

Not passion.

Right?

Passion Blast Temptation.

Passation, Last Ration.

Which I've never seen.

That came out later. actually.

That came out two years later.

Oh, that came out later?

Okay.

Or was it, was he in a

Yeah.

was he in a, was he in a Paul Schrader movie or something?

He was in Boondock Saints.

He was in Boondock.

Saints.

Remember that?

That's right.

We'd done that on this show.

Justin, I think that was your movie.

Yeah, He was a bad guy in Temptation of Christ as well.

Oh, he's the bad guy in that.

Oh, he he's totally the bad guy.

Here's Judas, yeah.

He plays Jesus in that.

I really love the aesthetic of this movie.

It's weirdly relevant

in the sense that in the very opening scene, the guy that's being chased on the rooftop

and he's like, death to America and Isra.

And then I was like, oh, no.

Like, how long has this been happening?

Like, history really is a flat circle, it seems.

I don't know.

And apparently that I I did a little reading up on it too.

And I guess it was this was based on a novel.

And I guess like that scene

not at all in the in the source material, that's when the freak was like, we have to put that in.

Like to set the stakes and everything.

And then, and then the partner guy says, I'm getting too old for the shit..

Does that predate lethal weapon?

I think maybe, because when was this?

80 85 Wasn't the first lethal weapon, 88?

I think so

And I all this time I thought Danny Glover said that first.

I could be wrong, but I think it's somewhere around there.

I met Danny Glover one time in Palm Springs.

I don't know if I've ever told this story at the Palm Springs Film Festival and

he came out of his limo and he was like, you know, people taking pictures, blah, blah, blah, comes into the theater.

And like I'm working for the local news, so I'm filming them and stuff and I ask if I can get a picture

And I can tell he's stoned out of his mind.

He's like, hey man.

And like we took a picture and I was like, is that good?

He's like, yeah, man, you all right.

Yeah, best in Celebrity encounter I've ever had.

I worked on a shoot one time for

one of the new

Jumanis.

Oh, nice.

And, it was like their social media.

Like all the talent was there and they' grabbing all this various shit.

And it was funny.

You look over, I looked over at one point and just on a couch

Danny Glover and Danny DeVito are like

kind of like both asleep, like kind of like leaning into each other.

Like they're clearly like waiting for their like one

thing they have to record and then go back to their lives.

But it was just so funny.

Yeah.

I was like, damn.

Did you go like this?

Willy quick take a picture.

Or start singing, a dam boy.

But this movie, what was interesting to

me is that aside from John Terturo and Willem

Dafoe, not a lot of these actors have done much sense or am I crazy?

Well, it was funny you say that because I had like a more where I looked up who was doing was

And old Dick Chance,

old Richard Chance was he is

on, he was like on a million seasons of like one of the CSI or something.

But it was it's like one of those shows that like you, you never watch, but like

everyone else does.

And so like he apparently had like a long running thing on that.

But yeah, it was like, I pretty much besides that, I didn't really notice.

Well, that's not true.

The guy who does play his, like his,

his new partner, I've seen him and other stuff.

I couldn't tell you.

John Planco.

But I've seen him in other stuff.

Life is a house, Rambo

Bride Wars.

Hmm.

Never heard of Brine Wars.

What was he in Rambo?

I don't remember him in Rambo.

But yeah. small part.

Yeah, probably a very small part.

It is a mess.

To me, I think the story was kind of kind ofvoluted at the end.

Don't you think?

Like, I didn't I didn't really understand fully.

Like, so Willem Dafoe is this high-level counterfeit

guy, but there's like a conspiracy somewhere there.

Like, he asked somebody

like one of the women was helping him or something, was informing for him.

What was, what was that?

The girl at the end at the strip club that works in the strip club front desk.

Yeah, she was informing for the cop.

Oh, for the cop.

Right?

Like, she was, what do they call it?

Yeah, a CI, a confidential informant.

I thought that's what was going on, but then she accidentally,

like one of the guys that was talking to her was also, yeah, wrapped up in in Willem Dafoe's thing.

So that's sort of like, why

Yeah.

why, like, why it became such a bit, why the

cops got pulled or why that cop got pulled in so much.

And because he's reckless.

Like he's like a reckless, like, you know, hero, want to be hero cop.

And if I'm not mistaken, the guy that

they stop and they penned him down and stuff in the blue suit towards the end

he turned out to be an undercover FBI agent.

Well, that's right knew?

Yeah.

Yeah, they were saying, I think that was like sort of the commentary

on it too, is it was like, um, like law enforcement in general, like

a lot of times, like one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing or whatever.

So like, the cops accidentally get involved.

Like that's when they're like, why are these, wow, there's so many of these guys.

Like, what it's like, yeah, it's the fucking FBI like, that's the CI or whatever.

Like, and because they were going outside of their sort of like

jurisdiction or taking the crime or taking it all

upon themselves, it's like, yeah, they overstepped.

Yeah, I was thinking, I was like, man, there's a lot of people chasing that for them.

Like, you think they get away and then there's like people waiting at the next bridge.

Like, what are they, are they cartel or something?

Yeah.

I love that chase scene.

That's one of the best chase scenes I've ever seen in a movie, period..

Oh, I mean, just like when they start going

up that ramp, it's just like, it's like, oh my God.

And William Freepkin, of all the crazy shit he's

done in his career and even in this movie, like one of the funniest things that I

was reading about was that when they're at the airport and I forget who's running on top of the divider thing

they, the airport staff said, don't do that.

They said, don't do that.

It's like, okay, I won't do that.

And then you get the actor do it again.

I won't do that.

And then he scolded the actor in front of the airport staff as, why did you do that?

Even though he got the shot.

There's this guy who like fired bullets behind the cast

of The Exorcist to get like an actual like reaction out of them.

He's a vibes director.

He's a what's the method director, it seems.

But Justin, yeah yeah, as a local,

as our local, as our resident horror

guy, surely you appreciate that William Friedkin connection here between Exorcist and this movie, yes.

You know, I didn't even really give any thought to that though because

this is actually the first time I've seen this movie.

I've heard of it.

But I didn't even realize that there was

that connection.

I guess looking back onto it, I could see the style

of it, but I wasn't really thinking

about that because I was mostly entertained by this

entire movie from the beginning end.

So I was like, man, this is like the epitome

of like 80s movies or like, what we've talked

about in previous episodes where, you know, that fine line

between like, 80 or sorry, 70s movies leading into the 80s.

I think this was that link right there.

I think this is that moment where now we're starting to

see how the 80s style comes about.

And you can actually see it near the end or the last 40 minutes of this movie.

You're like, oh yeah, this is definitely

this is definitely 80s territory with

in the big beginning, more of like that 70s noir style, which is I really appreciate it.

Yeah.

Do you think that car j scene would be done as realistically today?

I feel like today it'd be all done in front of the volume with wind machines.

And what do you guys think

Yeah.

I just feel like it's like, hey,

like, I can't see that just a production like that happening these days.

Where like, you are blocking off

a major argery to a major freeway and a major city

you know, and it's it's just so not how things are done anymore.

But I don't know.

And LA, isn't and as someone who lives in L.A.,

you constantly run into like closed off roads for filming and stuff, right?

Isn't that like a problem?

That's kind of what I I'm saying, though, is that I feel like you don't see that.

You see it less and less.

So it's like, I'm like, like,

it just kind of reminds, it was like, oh, wow, it really used to be

so different that like LA used to be like where everything was

filmed and like, if you wanted to shut down part of the city, you could.

It's like, I don't, I don't feel like they do that anymore.

Yeah.

How do you see the differences between

2026 LA when you watch old movies like this?

Like, do you still see somea that there's still some of that current?

Or no, like that's completely changed.

Like, do you notice those differences in the character?

It's funny because it's like if you go to

like the port areas in downtown and stuff, like it's in the

industrial parts, like it's still exactly like that.

it's like, you like you're looking at wareh It's like, yeah, there could be like

a counterfeit like thing going on.

Like, you don't know what's going on in any of these warehouses and there's tons of them all

over the city, all, all up and down the river, downtown, like whatever.

So some of that's still there for sure, but it's

like, it's like, now, it's like the same thing, but now they're Way

Yeah.

I got lost one time in LA., and I

don't know how I ended up near like the LA school district yard for all the school buses.

And then on the other side of the street, there was like a warehouse and

there was like a bridge and and I thought, oh, I'm going to get stabbed tonight.

That's what's going to happen.

And this was before GPS 90.

So I was like, oh, badass

Yeah, I was like, take the 101 to the 10 and then go.

And then thankfully I found my way home.

I'm like, okay.

But yeah, Ellie is a big industrial city, even like oil derricks that are well hidden.

Yeah, I I just, and I just funny, I just like, I was

just doing some chores and I was like I had an old printer I needed to get out, get rid of.

So I was like, what am I actually supposed to do?

I like found like the electronic waste like dump or whatever

And it's out like Sun Valley, which is like up on the five.

And, um, it's so funny because it's like, that's like all the like dumps are.

And it just felt so like, it just felt so weird.

It's like everything looked the same.

Like, and I was there on the weekend too, so I was like, no one lives out there.

It was dead.

Like it was just, it's like so weird.

Yeah.

And what did you guys think about the plot overall?

Because we were talking about how it was kind of messy.

I just had a little trouble following.

Like, why why does the guy played by William Peterson who plays Chance?

Why does he want to go off the books to investigate Willem Dafoe's character?

I just thought like, the guy's a counterfeit artist.

He's not like a serial killer or like a

diamond thief.

Like, it's kind of explained

earlier on when his partner dies, he kind of wants revenge.

I mean, his partner got blasted in the face.

That's in the trash can.

I mean, if I saw that or if, you know,

well, he didn't see it, but he was the first one to discover his body, too.

So as somebody who was about to be like three days away

from retirement, you that was the other trope.

Yeah, three days away from the retirement, the dude dies.

And he was just, you know, now he's a renegade cop with nothing to lose.

That's a great point.

That is a great point..

And he's clearly like a start to interrupt, but he's also clearly like a

He's like a thrill- seeking Death Wish guy.

Like he does the crazy base jumping thing.

Like where like we think he's going to kill.

Like, it's like, okay, he's like he's like bungee jumping, basically..

I like, I like how all of his friends were

very supportive of his bungee jumping habits.

They're all there like, yeah, man, you did it.

With like this really thin, like bungee cord too.

I'm like, damn.

Tied around one leg.

Arnold, you love action.

Surely you love this movie, right?

There's a lot going on here.

Yes, I'm glad that you picked this movie..

I had no idea.

When I thought I heard of the name

to Live and Die in LA., I couldn't help but think of a Tupac's song.

So I I was thinking like, oh, is it going to go down that route?

And then at the beginning of the movie, I saw Wang Chan.

I didn't look twice, I thought it said Wing Chan, which is a Kung Fu style

But my wife was like, oh, Wang Chan's in this.

I was like, what, who was that?

You know?

And she explained it was a band.

So I was like, okay.

And then

just just the way how it started, this

movie is like the kind of stuff I was I was raised on.

Except I didn't really watch too many movies. growing up.

Maybe when I was when I first started watching movies,

at a little backstory.

So I didn't really start watching movies until I was very sheltered.

I was in a bubble when I was a kid..

And so I didn't really start watching movies until

Yeah, yeah.

I was a teenager and maybe a

handful of movies as a kid, but a lot a lot of cartoons, just not movies.

And we've done Blood Sport on this show, which

is a great action movie also.

For the show a lot on KTLA on free

on cable, you know, so I would watch that a lot.

Yeah.

And the other thing I wanted to talk

about was the partner guy

played by John Pankl.

He played John Volkovich.

So he was sort of wrangled into this mess by

Richard Chance, but I wasn't sure, like, did he have his own agenda?

Did I miss something there?

I feel like there was some underlying agenda he may have had.

I thought that he more of was like, I thought he kind of like was

representing like the buy the book guy

Oh, okay.

Because it was kind of like, it felt like to

me, like what was going on was there's like, there's this sort

of like idealized, like kind of like good,

good cop that's like the partner that gets shot.

Like, and he, he like near the end of his career makes a dumb move and like

you know, and then that sets off his younger partner,

who's like already clearly like the brash, like, whatever guy.

So yeah, to like, you guys said to seek revenge.

But then it's like, you know, the the

way cop movies work is that they' buddies like or like like there's there should be two.

And it also too like there was a little bit where I'm like

there's like very like, I don't know if it's up homo erotic,

but there's like a lot of like male, like bonding shit

in this movie because it's like the guy, like the

chief guy is like, yeah, but you need a partner.

Like you can't go alone, you know?

And so I feel like that guy's role

was supposed to be like the sort of blank

slate that then, as we see throughout the movie,

like, you know, gets pulled down into the dirt, whether he likes it or not.

And then by the end of it, it's like

you know, he's pretty much fully like, you know, taken on.

Like now he's the guy that, you know, just died.

You know, it's like spoiler alert.

If you haven't, if you haven't watched this.

I I feel like he was the guy that

was like looking for an excuse to be that like badass cop at the end.

He's like, oh man, my partner died and now I'm full of all these

They say

that the buddy cop movie is like rom-coms for men.

Yeah.

It almost sounds like that's the case here, right?

Like you have the two partners and they start off as like they don't really like each other.

But in this movie, they didn't like each other even until the bitter end, I thought, right?

There was never really like a character arc for their relationship, was there?

I mean, he does avenge him in the end because

Chance gets shot and killed.

And then his partner goes after Willem Dafoe's character

and then he basically kills him.

What does he do?

He shoots him and he someone gets caught in fire or something like that?

He kind of he gets either shot or he gets hit

in the head by like a huge bike.

And like it's kind of like, oh, he's done for.

And he my taking takeaway was like,

he's kind of playing along. with that and letting him

letting Will Doe think that he won.

And then like right at the right moment, he still has

his gun and hits him in the chest.

But yeah, and apparently they apparently they like, the

studio did not want him to, the main guy to die.

And so

they shot an alternate ending

where he doesn't die and they showed that to

the studio, but then William Frekin

changed it and went back to the old one.

Interesting.

I appreciate that more, actually.

Yeah.

Because you don't always see the main character, you know, die on you.

Oh, it was great. me by surprise.

Oh, totally.

Whoa.

And I was like, I was like watching it high and stuff.

And I was I was just like, wow.

I literally was like, wow.

Like I stood up when I saw it.

Yeah, I was like, I was on the couch by myself phone and I was like, oh my God, holy shit.

They just did that.

I was like, what the fuck?

And that that sealed the deal for me on like really appreciating the direction of this movie.

If it was made today, he'd probably get like a little shot in the shoulder, a little grazed bullet.

Right.

And he's like limping towards. they come back at the end, yeah.

No, he gets like, he gets fucking like a slug to the fucking head.

And also, that part,

too, that really reminded me, the end of it really reminded me of The Departed.

Oh, yeah.

Like, like, like in a really good way.

Or I guess the Departed reminds me of that or whatever.

Yeah.

Well, I mean, it feels like a lot of movies have borrowed

from this movie that I have not heard of until you brought it up.

Like I'd never heard of this movie.

And I just find that interesting.

And you said it was based on a novel, correct?

Yeah, that's what I read.

I've read I forget the name of it or if it was the same name or what, but yeah.

And like, even movies like Die Hard was based on a novel.

Oh, it was based on a screenplay that was based on a novel that originally was supposed to start Frank Sinatro of all people

And Frank Sinatro was like, I'm too old for this shit.

So then like, they just,

they put it away and then later on they'd like, oh, let's make this movie.

And Bruce Wells got out attached and all that.

But I think, I think this movie also predates

Die Hard, if I'm not mistaken, because Die Hard came out like in 88 or 89, I believe.

It was the 90s.

It was like the latter part of the 80s.

But yeah, so Richard

Chance, he does have a bit of a character because his death

gets avenged by his partner.

And it's also kind of poetic that both he and his partner took

a slug to the face and that's how they both died, right?

I don't know if the script was trying to be that deep,

but like when I saw it, I was like, there's something there, Shirley.

But yeah, at

the end, wasn't there a guy that got shot in the crotch?

He got shot in the dick.

Was there that got shot in the dick?

I don't.

I thought it was RoboCop.

Yeah, there's also, it's like, it's it's like, you know, near the end of the movie

the Voovich is like being

like Chance and he's kind of like a,

you know, counterfeit version of him.

Like there there are, it's like, it's one of those things where it's like,

it is a mess, but there is very much like

there are definitely themes and there are definitely like,

there are definitely like clever things happening.

Also, like, just all the like, all the fire,

like to me, just like very much was like baptismal

or like, you know, whatever was going on.

And like,

yeah, there, it definitely had, it definitely had,

I guess the way to say it is like, it's not surprising to me that this guy also directed The Exorcist.

Because there were parts that were like, oh, this is more like a

haunted house than like an action adventure right now.

And by the way, like the cinematography was

like, you can tell they didn't put like too much, like, I don't know,

like stylized cinematography, but the cinemat cinematography they did have looked great.

The fire looked amazing.

Yeah.

And it's kind of like the whole, especially with

the fact that they have like one band doing all this music, like, it's almost like a long music video

Yeah.

Oh, my favorite, my favorite thing about it that that

would be so funny was when like you could tell they were like, maybe

they shot too much and just had so much footage and they' like, they didn't

have enough like original score to match.

Like, so you would just hear like the exact same

Like they're just playing the theme song again, but it's like really quiet.

It's like, oh, it's like, um, it's like, it's like, it exists in the world of the movie.

I'm like, that's pretty funny.

Diaggetic in a way.

Yeah, exactly, exactly.

Yeah.

There's like a scene, speaking on like how everything was filmed.

There's like a scene that I really appreciated alongside the

fire scene because that was beautifully shot too..

But there's like this evening driving scene where

there's a bunch of like really beautiful washed out, like purples,

blues and oranges and things like that.

And it just like, it definitely

gave it more, which is why I was like, oh yeah, this is definitely a LA.

Noir type of type of movie, but it gave me that like urban

beauty, um, but it had a little bit of like decay with it too.

But I really, I really appreciated the beautiful washed out scenery in the background.

And I wish the movie was more like on that

them and style, like, like that specific

section and then the ending with the fire scene as well.

I wish there was more of that in the movie.

Just the way that it was filmed in general,

I wish it was just kept that theme because I

felt like it jumped around a little bit when it came to like filming style.

But I appreciated it nonetheless.

Well, let me ask you really quick, Justin.

What do you, what did you think about the story pacing?

This felt very

like the pacing felt very modern to me for an 80s movie.

Like this is not a slow movie.

There's always something going on.

Like, what did you think about the pacing?

It definitely help my interest from beginning to end.

I mean, there are some scenes that like slogged along a little bit.

But, you know, I

Yeah.

thought that the pacing was just

messy enough, and I agree with Alan on this.

It was just messy enough to where like it kept things like entertaining,

but I felt like a lot of the scenes had like underlying,

um, layers to it as well.

Like the car chase scene in particular, which is probably my most favorite scene the entire movie.

But,

you know, with Vokovic's character,

he, if you notice during that entire scene, his character

is actually evolving as well.

He's having a mental breakdown in the back seat and being shot at and everything.

And I feel like that was his

kind of like pivot point in the entire film as well.

So like following his character arc

throughout the entire movie and then the last 40 minutes, he's like, he's like,

okay, he's no longer the play by the book guy

It was, it was interesting to see his side of the story.

And then for it to end with him, uh,

you know, continuing on the,

you know, the regade cop type of deal.

I thought, I thought, you know, at the end of the day, I think the movie was more or less about his experience

than it was for the other guys.

I agree.

My biggest complaint, if I

had to have any, was, I wanted to see more Willem Doe's character.

I feel like he was kind of sprinkled throughout, right?

Like he was, he shows up, we see his process for counterfeiting,

which, by the way, was based on an actual, like they consulted

an actual counterfeiter who came onto the set

and actually did the process in real time and

they filmed it, which I thought was a nice, you know, detail.

And but Willem Defult, like he kind of shows up here and there.

He has one scuffle

pretty much at the very end with the guys, with the main cops.

And then and then that was pretty much it.

Like, he's not in it a whole lot.

Like, what do you guys think about that?

Did you want to see more of it?

I always find bad guys interesting, I guess, is what I'm getting at.

I thought it was interesting how

Dick Chance, and how they said that they'

I prefer to call it.

Chance Dick.

I mean, Dick Chance.

We're all adults here, Arnold.

When he gave his fake name, like, oh, yeah, I'm from Palm Springs.

I was like, wait, what?

And then he gave the name, the last name Jessup, which,

which is, um, they have Jessup Auto Plaza over here.

Like, like, I don't know if they have Jessup

from a few good men, some, uh, some friends, uh,

from that family who were like, hey, yeah, throw my name in there.

Yeah.

I do like the references to

like other, you know, California locations because I was in Palm Springs for like 12 years.

And

Yeah.

he's like, hey, why don't you, you're from Palm Springs,

but you don't got a tan or whatever you said?

That shit was hilarious.

Yeah.

Yeah.

But what did you think, Alan?

More of Willem Dafoe's character?

What did you think about that?

Yeah, I mean, I feel like, you know, they probably were making the right move because

you know, just in the theory of like less is more and like,

you know, like, and what they do show a show of

us, show of him to us is so like, you know, it's like weird

psychosexual things are happening.

Like, like he's, he's meant to be like a cipher,

like he's meant to be like a counterfeit version of a person or like whatever you want to say.

But what I what I was going to say that was

connected to some of the stuff we were just talking about, was when

he's in the back seat losing his mind, that's

like from when he like shot the gun on the exorc, like the airplane thing.

Like, like they were like, like he did, like the,

the guy driving was driving very erratically.

Like he would not, they would not let them like be like, actually harnessed in.

So like, he was like, legitimately scared when he's in like the backseat.

Like his like frustration real.

And then the other thing I was going to say, I think we were talking about like the style

of it or like how it was shot.

Like, it's such a simple trick.

It's such an it's such a noir thing.

It's like Sunset Boulevard, but like

in the opening, like you see

the gunshot in like the red room.

So like, you're like the whole time you're kind of waiting like, okay, when are we who shot the gun?

Who's, dude, did they get hit?

What, or is that just like a random thing?

And obviously as you, we get close to the warehouse and everything's on fire, we're like, oh, we're going to see

whatever that was.

And we do.

But it was like I said type of thing where it was like, I

feel like, I feel like it was like deceptively, deceptively

stylish, like deceptively clever.

It's definitely like it has some flashy, like

moments and stuff, but I it does seem like a lot of a lot of thought went into it.

And a lot of like, it feels like a lot of crafts

men worked on this.

It must have taken a lot of technique to get these shots to load the way they did

These are like, especially like Defoe Tre, these are like amazing actors.

These are like some of the best actors this stage and the

screen I've ever, you know, seen in modern times.

The guy that did all the

like stunt stuff, I forget his name name, but he's like a guy,

like he's like a guy that did a lot of shit. that's like a legend

And then clearly, like also like

having like at the what was at the time, like one

of, if not the biggest band in the world to do like the, the score for it.

It's like, it's there's like a lot, it's like a very, like, it's a testament to like how many

how many people working on a thing it takes to make it like good.

Agreed.

And again, like you mentioned Kraft.

I feel like there would be less people on a movie like this today

because it would probably be filmed in front of green screen in front of the volume.

You know, more digital artists, which, by the way, nothing

against digital artists, but, you know, like you said, like back then,

it takes a, it takes so much to make a movie because most everything had to be done in camera

right.

And, yeah, I don't think you get that same level of craft.

Not so much on on action movies these days, I think like it's

just not there anymore because it's just easier to film in front of a green screen, I guess.

But yeah, but in the end, what happens in the end?

So after he died dies, after his partner dies, then Willem

Dafoe's character dies in the warehouse, he goes and he

recruits the girl that works at the strip club, right?

The girl works at the front desk

And what does he tell her?

He's, you're going to work for me now.

And well, I can't remember what his reasoning was.

I wasn't clear on that either.

I think the reasoning is that he's he's like

assuming the role of this sort of like reckless or

more like go out and take it kind of cop

And I think also the implication too, is that like,

you work for me now, like we're we're going to start fucking now too.

It's like, I think that's like part of it too.

So I feel like he, I feel like basically it's like a territorial thing.

And like, and it's also kind of like to like, you

know, there's a lot of it where it's like, like that one, the cop

from the very beginning is about to retire, but he can't help but be a cop and want to do this thing on his own

And that, like, he suffers for that.

And then it's like his partner, you know, gets because

of his like want for revenge and justice, he gets pulled into this thing.

He eventually loses his life.

And like this guy that was, you know, as

we kind of see him, it's like buy the books, like whatever

like, even if you're trying to do that, you're still

going to get pulled into this just by nature of the world and your job and you're rolling it.

And the same thing for her.

It's like, yeah, honey, you think you might have gotten out of

this whole situation with what just went down, but like, you still work at the strip club.

Like you're, you're someone's, someone's going to own you.

Like, whatever

She had that sort of Al Pacino godfather three realization.

Once I think when I'm out, they pull me back in.

Yeah, exactly.

Hey, I haven't seen Godfather Part 3.

No, I mean, I feel like the 80s just in general were like a pretty good.

I kind of feel like the action would be like, really just recently kind of like took the noseive.

Like in the early 2010s.

So like, I don't know if that's because of Obama or like what, but like

they're definitely like, they don't make those like they used to, for sure.

Like, I feel like the last good, like action movie I saw was like.

It's like weird because now a lot of like

But like a lot of like movies now that I feel like are action-y are actually not really action either.

So I have to ask you, if someone who lives in LA., you know, you're adjacent to

the film industry, like, could you see yourself in a movie like this or any movie or show?

I mean, I don't know.

It's so funny because it's like, I feel like there has been,

like, I'm just thinking specifically of like Bob Odenirk, did those like nobody movies.

Yeah, those are fun.

And those are fun and those are good

I love, I, I'm like obsessed with Car Chases.

So like I've like, I've always wanted to write like a car chase heist movie.

But I, I haven't, but I mean, it's fascinating.

And there is something about LA that like lends it itself to it where it's like,

kind of like, it's kind of a big, it's kind of a big mess, like the movie we just watched was.

Like it's like, it's like all these different things coming together.

Like even in that movie too, it's like, yeah, what does the one guy say?

Like hundred like we don't, we don't use hundreds in this part of town.

Like they're like, it speaks to all that stuff.

So, like, I don't know.

Like, it would be the place to do it, but I, I would be, uh, I don't know.

I would be, I would be surprised if I saw myself in a.

It is the type of thing I would like to write for sure.

Yeah, you know, I have a question for you, Alan, because we've

talked about this on the podcast before as well, but

I think you see it in like the movie Drive and

then La La Land a little bit, that transition from

like that amber light street lighting to the fluorescent street lighting.

What is your what is your take on that?

Oh, yeah.

I mean, it's so funny.

It's like, because I've actually seen it.

It happened actually on that bridge I was talking about

by my place.

I remember when they were putting in the new lights and they put them in peacemeal.

So it was like at night you would drive and you

would see like, oh, these are the old ones and these are the new ones.

And the old ones look so much better.

Like, obviously, like it's just sort of like

that warmer, grainier, sort of fuzzier.

But it's like, I don't know.

It's like, it's not like the end of the world that it's like, and it kind of,

they kind of just like, the way things are online too,

I feel like everything online is very white and very blue and very cold

and stuff.

And it's like, I'm on like, I'm always trying to make things a little

bit warmer and more saturated. because I think that's

what I think that's what's like great about LA.

It's it's like you go and it's like, God, it's like really fucking green like out here, like whatever.

of that lighting is why like a lot of people have stepped away from making, you know, more films

in person in LA. or I think it's probably all

about like taxes and shit like that.

a bunch of filmmakers were like, please don't change the bulbs.

Like there's like a reason why.

Like have you guys ever heard that?

I've actually actually never seen it, but there's a documentary called

LA Plays itself and it's just literally

about it's about production here.

It just shows a bunch of like stuff that was shot here.

It shows the differences and like the, you know, it's like one thing too.

It's like there's lots of different kinds of architecture here.

You could like, you could pretend you're in Spain.

You can pretend you're in Hawaii.

You can pretend you're in

the desert.

You can pretend you're in outer space.

You can be in the mountains, you know, So there's like all these different sorts

of like, it's kind of like a, it

is like, like the Southern California region is like a soundstage,

like a big sound stage or whatever I'm trying to say, like a backlot.

So I think unfortunately a lot of it's like taxes and

money shit because I know that a lot of a lot of the reasons

why like stuff moved to Georgia and like, I know a lot of stuff has been shooting in like, um

Glasgow, Scott Scotland is because

of tax credits and stuff and they can cheat it.

It's like, I feel like, like Toronto has

always been used for New York because Toronto basically is like New York, but it's cheaper to shoot in Canada.

And then like, I think it's maybe Vancouver or

somewhere on, I think Vancouver is like

for some reason, there was like a period of Vancouver's like architecture

that was like very futuristic.

So it's like every sci-fi movie that is still

based on Earth, like, but in like the year 3000,

it's always like the convention center they built in Vancouver in like the 80s or something like that.

Interesting.

So that's all like, that's all like weird happenstance of like

what materials were cheap to make stuff at the time,

like in this area and then like however long later, can you film there?

But, um, yeah, it's like there like that thing in

that documentary is like, like Los Angeles, like just by like sheer, like

like film used and amount of movies

and like show runtime.

It's like the most photographed place in

the world ever just because for so long, everything was shot here.

And it is very like, it's funny.

It's like you'll drive around and you're like, it's cinematic.

Like there is something

and a lot of places are like that too, but it's definitely pronounced here.

What What are the two places you would tell

people if they're visiting LA or must visit?

I mean, you really, you really got to go, I mean, oh, that's hard because it's like

Because what I would say is it's like, you

need to go, you need to go to the top of a

mountain somewhere and you need to go to like Muso and Frank because it's like, then it's like you're going to like a steak.

I think Muso and Frank is like probably the best place in LA.

You get, you get a steak, you get a martini.

You're in, you're also, that puts you in Hollywood.

You'll see the shit of Hollywood

while you're there.

But then there's times, I mean there there's also just like,

like Griffith Park's really nice, like, you

know, the, the beach is great and all that stuff, but I. The red Tarpets?

That area.

When I When I first moved here, I was like, this is crazy.

It's because it's like, it's like

it's still there.

Like, it's like, it's weird that they haven't like completely gotten rid of it.

And that took me a lot of a lot of it too, like I'm from Florida.

I'm from like the swampy part of Florida.

So like the librea tarpus to me is I'm like, yeah, that's

the grove is a little out of my world.

but the Burbank one I'm at a lot because I have the AMC pass or whatever.

And those are my favorite AMCs in the city.

For me, personally, it's just so easy to jump on the five, go

to the one that's in the mall or the one right next to the mall

was sleeping in the back of his car.

And apparently Andy Dick woke up and it like barbecue sauce all over and was

Josh took her to Burbank and he got out of the car.

He took him.

Everybody everybody literally has an anti Dick story.

It's That's crazy.

Yeah, food cumber or something?

So he's just like a, is he like a pariah of LA?

Well, yeah, I mean, he's just like a crazy drug addict.

Like, he's just like a crazy, crazy drug addict.

Like he, he just recently

died OD'd on the street because

he, like, I think he, like, got away from his handers for like two seconds.

And like, in that time, like thought

he was smoking weed or like whatever, but it was laced with fentanyl

or PCP or something he OD'd and like like the

homeless guy had ancan or something and like brought him back, but like, yeah, he's just like, that's just who he is.

I love that everybody's had an Andy Dick run-in story.

Hey, yeah, I actually have

just a couple of notes because I think we passed up

on some of the funnier things that happened in this movie, so I wanted to touch on those.

No, it's okay.

This will be a part of like my whole review thing.

But

there that point in time where they're like that starting

the card chase and then they're like overlooking the bridge

and then they like start fightingiring on them from above.

I like how they like run.

They duck and cover.

One goes behind reasonable behind a mound of dirt.

The other one goes behind like the smallest bush.

I'm like, look.

I'm like, bro, you're going to get shot under that, yeah.

Was it, you

know, for Chance being like an undercover cop or

whatever, he sure gets fucked up a lot and is not prepared for any situation ever.

And, uh, during the chase scene,

they're like waving people out of the way.

They're like, get out of the way, but they're the ones going the wrong side of the road the entire time.

Yeah. there's a, we were a couple of like interesting,

funny moments for me, but, uh, I, I I felt like this movie was uh,

a complete joy to watch.

I had a great time watching it.

I did kind of like watch it last minute.

So like right before we started doing this podcast.

But after I watched it, I was like, man, I'm so amped to talk

about it because it was such a fun watch.

Willem Dafoe was amazing.

Although we did not get to see very much of

them, I think the times that he was on screen was very

impactful.

and I think he really

created his villain, made it his own.

And him dying in such a way, in such a menacing

way, you know, with lighting the cash on

fire, getting shot and then dropping it and just being lit up in flames,

completely terrifying looking, by the way,, especially when he's screaming.

You know, I thought all around, like, this is probably one of Will Duffoe's best

But, you know, other than that, it's a really fun watch.

It does slog in certainty areas where I'm like, okay, you know, let's move it along here.

Other than that, you know, I highly recommend people go watch it, especially if you've never seen it.

This is my first viewing of it.

I've always heard of it.

Never got around to watching it, and I didn't even really think about

watching it up until we were doing this movie in particular.

So, you know, my rating at the end of the day

For this movie, it, I give it a

zero ready.

N, I was it was, I watched it yesterday.

It was a taco Tuesday.

I had a nice light dinner of about eight tacos.

with chips and salsa, and actually, I didn't have eight.

I only had five.

But then

when we immediately watched the movie right afterwards, and

no food coma at all.

I was I was in fact, I think I pulled my side.

I pinched my sad nerve a little bit.

but I was still at the edge of my seat at

the edge edge of the couch for most of the movie.

And probably because I was like stretching also.

But man, this movie is right up my alley.

It's it's it's

I loved it.

I love action movies

and this did not disappoint at all.

Oh, yeah, I mentioned that I was like prepping myself earlier in the day.

I was like listening to to Live and die in LA, Tupac

song, you know, because I was, I don't know, I just, I went into it, I love going to movies

not knowing anything about it.

I didn't even look it up or anything.

I just double checked the chat and like, what movie is it?

And that was it.

And I was like, yes, I don't have to rent it.

I got it already on

on MGM on Amazon.

So, it was a really good movie.

I do love how they made LA

very much part of the character.

I love the shots.

I love

just like all the

chase scenes like this sort of style is so up my alley.

And I wanted to watch it again.

Like very soon, I was like, it was still stuck in my head.

I'm like, man,

was a lot of this in like Long Beach area?

Like that's all like the lot it was like San Pedro.

Okay.

Okay.

I've only been around the area a couple of times and I

was like, um, but this was probably in the

2000s.

It was probably, it just felt like I

love the gri, like, I don't know, greedy griminess of it with like all the railroroads and stuff.

And like, it just felt really, really cool.

I love that vibe.

And

man, I really love this movie and I would have to agree.

I think did we all say a four out of five?

That's what I was going to..

I went into it and thinking about it.

And that is a lot of times when we talk about movies, like I go into it

you know, like another movies, I'm like, oh, maybe a 2.5.

But then after talking about it and

getting more in depth that everybody.

So everybody's input, my score goes up.

It's right where I had it at.

Four out of five.

So I haven't had a chance to do it write up on the movie yet, but I really enjoyed it.

This was really fun movie.

The action sequences alone make it worth a watch.

You can just tell that they really put a lot of

like love and care into those chase scenes at the end there.

And I I wasn't ready for the main guy

to die, Mr. Richard Chance, but, you know, I

think it's great that it's averted my expectations.

But before we go, I do want to point out, since there was a lot of funny moments as Justin pointed out, I did want to share

really quick a couple of screenshots I took that stood out to me.

Let me do that really quick.

Give me one second here.

So this gentleman, if you guys can see my screen, I love how happy this X-ray is.

Yeah, that was

just like, look at his face.

I thought he was going to be the focus of the scene.

Like when that happened, I was like, oh, that's the guy.

Yeah.

He's got the rose cololored sunglasses and glasses.

I was like, the guy.

A chubby Pedro Escobar, right?

Oh, that's him.

Yeah That's funny.

So that stood out funny.

The motherf one was this.

When he's going to the strip club, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter,

enter, enter, run the whole perimeter of the fucking strip club.

I don't know why.

It just made me laugh.

Like, how obvious would it not have to be for you that would have to put enter on all these

But it's like that sometimes on the front of strip clubs.

It do be like that sometimes.

Well, it does it?

I don't know.

I just.

It seems excessive, is what I'm getting at.

Well, they probably just didn't want like blank ball.

If you notice, some strip clubs, they have

like this grand old entrance, but it's like blocked off because

like that's technically the entrance for like the dressing room or whatever.

Because that's just the way that the building was built.

So they're like, oh, okay, this is going to be the main girl entrance.

So we have to send all the men to the, to the backside,

you know, so their wives don't see them or whatever.

I just wonder if this used to be like a restaurant, and these were all the windows for the restaurant

Yeah, I don't know.

Who knows?

Yeah, I could totally see that.

Yeah.

So I just wanted to point that out since we were talking about some funny moments in the movie.

But yeah, that extra was great.
