Never Seen It Podcast - Episode 20: Dick Tracy

Episode Summary

In this episode we breakdown the un-iconic, masturbatory, Warren Beatty vanity project that is "Dick Tracy". The film stars Beatty in the titular role, Al Pacino as the over-the-top, mustache-twirling villain and Madonna, the wife of a director who apparently never showed her how to act her way out of a paper bag. In this EXPLOSIVE episode, we break down what film noir is and what it would look like if someone green-lit a movie that was like Tim Burton's Batman minus Batman (and Tim Burton).

Episode Notes

Dick Tracy came out the year after Tim Burton's 'Batman', and it shows. Warren Beatty, a former Hollywood "power-house", felt inspired to make a vanity project inspired by Batman, taking a lesser-known comic book character with a rogues gallery of aptly-named villains and bringing it to the big screen.

But is it a good movie? Between Madonna's horrible, off-key singing (no wonder she was paid so little) and the seemingly endless sequence of montages, who's to say if this movie is any good? Critics at the time didn't think so, and what had the potential to be a cult-hit, ala Batman, has quickly become nothing more than a footnote in movie history, much like Beatty's career.

When he's not making mediocre projects or forgetting how to read, Beatty enjoys spending time with his cat Sparkles and catching up on tv shows like My Three Sons and Say Yes to the Dress. You can watch more of Beatty's films on late-night paid programming channels, and you can catch more of Madonna's music in the discount bin at your local thrift store.
