But first, we want to talk about the movie we're discussing, which is Blade Runner 2049.

Blade Runner 2049 came out 2017.

This is 30 years after the events of

the first film, a new Blade Runner, LAPD officer Kay,

unearts a long, buried secret that has the potential to

plunge what's left of society into chaos

Kay's discovery leads him on a quick on a quest

to find Rick Decker, a former LAPD Blade Runner who has been missing for

30 years, starting Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Admas.

Also, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Sylvia Hoax, McKenzie, I mean, Jared Leto

the list goes on and on.

And I chose this episode because we were going to discuss one of our

lost episodes, I believe it was the original Blade Runner, but let's we went with Blade Runner 2049.

Arnold, I know you hadn't seen it before doing it for the show.

I mean, initial thoughts.

You know, I know you like a little bit of action, which is sprinkled throughout this story.

What did you think?

Definitely sprinkled.

It was sprinkled throughout.

Yeah.

Yeah, I had just finished watching it 26 minutes ago.

I thought it was really good.

I was really good.

Had about six cups of coffee.

What are your initial thoughts?

Blade Runner 2049?

I fell asleep, but then I finally got through it.

It was good.

It was good.

It was just that I started it a little late, but it was good.

It just took me a while to like get into it.

It was a little slower than I expected, but it was good.

Now, Alex as our wrestling fan, Dave Bautist on, what do we think?

I mean.

Mr. Bautista.

Yeah.

He's good.

No, he's a great actor.

I think this is one of his earlier roles

from leaving the WWE.

I mean, Batista, he took a route

way different than The Rock than Dwayne Johnson.

He did not seek out the typical

action roles that like, Dwayne Johnson

and John Cena went towards that he really wanted to like

show that his acting chops were worthy of getting

more roles than just the physical

action roles that he would be stereotyped into.

And if you look at him now, he's, he's like a very spelt guy.

He's not as big as he used to be.

He's He's skinny.

And I think that's that's the funny thing, too, is like, Dwayne

Johnson saw Batista and was like, I got to do that, you know?

And that's why he did the, the smashing machine because

he wanted to get some sort of Oscar nod out of it.

He's for life.

He has this movie, the Dune movies, Glass Onion, all of the Avengers, Marvel movies, obviously as

I forget the character.

He's not going back to Marvel, though.

He's not..

Oh, he's not.

You don't think he'll be..

He's a James Gunn guy.

If anything, if he goes back to any sort of

superhero stuff, he'll do a DC universe.

That's interesting.

Well, we'll keep watching his career with great interest because

he is he does have some acting jobs, that's for sure.

I think John Cena is a good actor.

I think John Cena is a better actor than The Rock, if I'm being honest.

Yeah, so we're talking about Blade Runner 2049.

The sequel to the original Blade Runner movie with Harrison Ford,

probably the, you know, sort of the

the quintessential cyberpunk movie, right?

Anthony, what do you think about?

What are your initial thoughts?

When you first watched 2049, were you wary

that it might not be a good legacy sequel?

Sometimes these legacy sequels, you, they don't really turn on as good as you'd hope, but.

Yeah, so I, if I remember correctly, I think I might have watched

2049 before I watched the original Blade Runner.

Really?

Yeah, I mean, when we did the first episode, I hadn't seen Blade Runner.

I was in the crowd that hadn't seen it.

And so, yeah, I believe I saw 2049 first and loved it.

I thought that it was stylistic.

It was great

So, I mean, going back and watching the

original Blade Runner, you know, then you understand, you're like, oh,

okay, Harrison Ford is replicant this whole time.

And you know that going into it.

So this surprise is kind of ruined, but, you know, I still think it,

I don't know, it paints it in a very unclear manner in the original movie,

unless you're really paying attention, I think.

But I thought that this was a

much better film than the original Blade Runner.

I thought cinematography was a lot better.

I mean, obviously, the special effects, you, for the time were

groundbreaking, I'm sure, but maybe it's just I'm not a huge 80s movie fan.

I don't love the, you know, a lot of the style and the looks of it, but

I I watched this in

preparation for the podcast after watching the original Blade Runner.

I watched both back to back.

And so going from the original Blade Runner into this one,

I didn't have the problem of falling asleep by Donnie.

Like I was engaged because it felt like it moved faster

than the original Blade Runner did.

Like some of the opening scenes and the original Blade Runner, there's like, you

know, the cars flying through the cityscape to show this future wrestling.

I'm sure they're doing it to show the tech because it was groundbreaking, but like, there was weird audio going on.

It was like trying to sound like radio chatter, but, you know, it's all just very dated at the time.

So I feel like that probably pulled me out of it.

Whereas this movie, I mean, you're getting like

deep colors and like rich, beautiful landscapes that Denny is like famous for.

I just thought it was a beautifully shot movie.

Roger Deakins was the DP.

He's done everything from the Shawshank Redemption, 1917, No Country for Old Men.

I mean, if he'd just stopped there, he'd be a legend, but he's got also Fargo under his belt

James Bond, the Skyfall movie, Sicario.

He even did Rango.

I don't know how you DP on an animated movie, but he must have consulted as far as like the visual look, right?

Is DP a director, producer?

Director of photography.

Oh, okay.

Was Rango entirely animated or was it miniatures?

Photography.

I think it was entirely animated, but I think he was probably a consultant.

They're probably like, oh, how would you like this scene digitally or something like that?

I don't know.

I'm just guessing here, but..

The Village, Barton Finger, tons of great, tons of classics.

But you know what else came on in 1982?

E.T. came on in 1982.

And The Thing, which I recently watched.

No, I was just going to say you guys were talking about visual effects.

I was going to say this movie won for Best Cinematography and Best Visual effects.

Oh, I don't even know that.

But yeah, you combine Roger Deakins with Denise Ellenview.

How do you go wrong with that?

Justin, I know you're a fan of the

original Blade Runner more than this one, but you also kind of like the whole Cyberpluck thing and general, right?

Or where do you sort of stand on that?

No, I hate Cyberpunk.

It's the worst genre.

Okay, no.

No, I love Blade Runner, and I kind of disagree with you guys

that, that the original movie seems kind of campy.

I don't know.

Maybe it's because I watched like the HDR final cut or something like that

But man, when I watched the original Blade Runner, I was just kind of in a.

I'm like, man, I forget how like beautiful this movie is too.

I think, yeah, maybe it was like held back by some of the tech.

You can tell it's like miniatures on green screen for the most part, but

like those miniatures are so detailed.

Um, they do seem, uh, very lifelike to me.

And I think some of the scenery from Blade Runner uh,

is very, um, you know, on point

when it comes to that cyberpunk futurism, that noir style

that we've come to love.

And I think the 2049

movie reflects that in certain cases, too, because while

I think the first Blade Runner was more or less just showcasing

the scenery because it is beautiful

I think 2049 just kind of takes that similar

concept and story builds

with the environment that is around the characters.

So,

yeah, I mean, it's, uh, it's

definitely interesting because I did a back-to-back viewing as well.

And just like Anthony, I'm like, I'm captivated the entire time.

I love this series.

I love Ridley Scott's work and I love how other directors are able to

kind of take their hand at reinventing

what was already kind of laid out for us.

Same thing with like the alien stuff.

I mean, I think 2049 definitely opens

things up in the alien universe a little bit more

I mean, there's little snippets and little Easter

eggs of it in the first Blade Runner movie if you're

actually really painting attention to what's going on in the backgrounds.

And you can see, like,

watching the movie without knowing that the

Alien series is kind of sort of interconnected,

just like different time frames.

Now that with 2049 being

here, and then I think, what, 2099 coming out as a series, I

think what they're doing is actually

forming that link,

that chain to connect both worlds in some shape or form.

I would I would be, it would be be kind of crazy to see some

of the characters from, you know, past movies and franchises

kind of like appear, even if it is just like a small

little walks-by the screen, you know?

If they're doing a show, you know they're going to have some fan service.

Do you think, Justin, that they will, though?

Because since Disney owns Fox and Fox' aliens and I was Blade Run Fox.

And I think Blade Runner is under Paramount.

Or no, no, MGL.

MGM.

Maybe.

Do you think that I'm going to say maybe because

I know that that Alien Earth has

some, I don't know if any of you' seen Alien Earth, but they do

have some ties talk about.

They talk about, yeah, that was the series.

I recommend it.

It's pretty cool.

It's It's kind of like.

It's a great show.

I'll just, not to dive into it too much, but

it's like Peter Pan with aliens.

It's kind of kind of crazy.

Yeah.

I feel like they they kind of tie more to Predator, though

in the alien Earth a little bit more than they do with like.

I think they're kind of bringing all these worlds together.

So we'll be think, Ali versus Predator versus Blade Runner Escapes.

Well, I think versus Batman versus..

They are, yeah, they are confirmed part of the same world.

This isn't actually, like Blade Runner isn't canonically in the same universe as Alien.

There's just the Easter eggs that really Scott points to, but it

is because they are owned by two different studios that canonically it'

s not actually tied.

Yeah, and the events of Alien actually take

far further into the future than the events of like Blade Runner.

I think that's where the lion kind of divides itself a little bit.

Interesting.

Someday they could connect, right?

Like Freddy versus Jason and all of a sudden it's like, oh, yeah, they are in the same universe, but

not originally.

Disney buying up everything, it's going to happen.

It's true.

Sorry.

I don't know why I got all excited like, what?

Oh, yeah, they could be a part of the same universe when I haven't even seen aliens.

Mickey Mouse is going to be a Blade Runner.

Oh, it's my Mickey Mouse.

Yeah, you guys are just talking about Release Scott and stuff.

I was just going to say that I didn't know this, but Ridley Scott was actually

the director initially for this movie and then he dropped out,

though, because he was actually shooting for Alien Covenant.

So to take over, it was just a conflict I mean, conflict of scheduling.

So he stayed on board.

He picked the wrong movie.

Yeah, he did.

Yeah, he stayed on board as the executive producer to oversee

like the creative direction of Blade Runner, but he stepped down as a director for the movie.

And I know we're talking about Blade Runner, but the Alien franchise is such a weird franchise.

Like, there's like good stuff and there's really bad stuff and then there's

like really good stuff and it's like, it's back and forth, back and forth.

And

I haven't one bad thing that isn't Covenant.

I don't know.

I thought Promethe.

I thought Covenant was better than Prometheus, if I'm being honest.

Wow.

That thought alien Romulus.

That's a take.

I think Prometheus was just like cat of too full of itself.

It was way too full of.

Like,

I don't want to get into it.

I just I thought Covenant was.

I thought Covenant made up for Prometheus because it follows up like.

You just like the comedic relief of McBride's character?

Because I felt I felt that Covenant was a little bit

bloated in a lot of like the political religious aspect to it.

And then like, was it my Michael Hea

what was his name?

Michael Michael Fbender.

Fassbender.

Oh, Michael Fassbender playing David, um,

like wanting to like fuck himself, sort of.

And uh, I thought that, I thought that

was a shirtfire sign of like, oh yeah, okay,

this, this, this, this movie is actually really

bloated and full of itself.

I think Prometheus was kind of a

setup and a retelling

of how the events for Alien in the Future come about.

I kind of like the origin storyesque kind of vibes to it.

I think Coven I think Covenant was actually the one that was a little more full of itself.

Well, you liked Alien Romul., right?

The movie most recent movie that came out?

Yeah, absolutely.

But if F album?

Yeah.

Great job, by the way.

I love that movie.

So I was just reading the trivia.

It looks like it sounds like they were going to Denise Ellenvie wanted to cast David Bowie

to play the part that Jared Leto wanted a plane.

But David Bowie passed away.

And then Jared Leto played the bad guy.

And I feel like this is the last like role

I've seen Jared Leto and where I'm like, oh yeah, he's actually pretty good in this.

He's not just, he hasn't reached crazy Jared Leto status just yet, right?

And, what did you guys think about him as a villain?

I mean, overall, like I thought, like, oh, like the guy can't act.

He's weird and crazy on other projects for some reason, but on this one, he was like, well tamed.

He's fine.

I feel like he kind of gets lost in the greater story, right?

Like you're really following Gosling's character

and Yeah, he's barely in it.

I feel like, is a more intimidating villain than he is, right?

Because it's like, she's the one doing all the ass kickery.

He just shanks a naked lady, you know what I

in a room, and that's kind of as creepy as he is.

Maybe that's And he's got creepy eyes.o was having him in small doses.

Did you notice that his lair was made out of a lot of wood?

Yeah.

And I was reading that the reason for that is to show, like wood.

How wealthy it is because wood is rare, yeah.

Yeah, rare.

That that was a nice aesthetic choice.

Oh, that makes sense when she's like, oh, I've never seen a tree before.

Yeah, when he gets the, and when he gets the little wood thing checked, he's like, oh, like, you know, you're rich.

Switching gears a little bit.

Ryan Goslingling spends the good chunk of the movie, thinks thinking, oh, maybe

maybe I'm human.

And then the little kid that they keep flashing back to.

Huh?

And then he's like, oh, maybe I'm human and stuff.

And then he finds out the gut punch, right at the end, he's actually a replicant.

And I really love the way that it's like almost like a double twist.

But

I don't know.

Like, Donnie, what did you think about that?

Like, what did you think about that entire emotional thread with Ryan Gosley's character?

I was kind of expecting that.

I figured that's what was going to happen at the end.

Did you guys like, I almost felt like it was setting itself up to be like that?

Yeah.

Well, I guess the question I'm asking is like,

I guess in this universe, they're saying it doesn't even matter if

you're a replicant or a human, it's pretty much one in the same.

In terms of feeling emotion, feeling human

emotion, like, did you kind of get that sort of?

Yeah, that's what it was about, right?

They' like, um, I think they're trying to point

to the fact that they are the same, right??

Because initially like they're saying that like

the bioengineered humans don't have a soul.

But it's all about like, like the difference would be like free will, right?

But they actually do have free will because you see them throughout the movie kind of going

going against what they're told to do.

The reason why I ask this is because I feel like that question

was answered at the end of the first movie with a guy in

the rain and he's like talking about how he's seen all this death and carnage.

So like, I guess what I'm asking is like, what were they trying to say with that whole

theme in this movie that we didn't already know from the first one?

I think there's a lot lot to do with like memory.

I mean, Harkening back to, you know, talking about eternal sunshine

you know, like what, like, but,

you go to that scene where it's that girl who has those,

I mean, compromise disease and

she's behind that glass and she can't really leave.

She's creating memories because her memories are so

like she's able to create really vivid memories

and like, and I feel like the fact that

they's these memories are coming from a replicant, the

daughter, the daughter of a replicant, right?

Basically.

Who is Harrison Ford's character?

No, Rachel is Rachel's a replicant.

Harrison Ford.

So is Harrison Ford.

Was that the twist of the first movie, too?

Yeah.

I think I think I missed that in the first movie.

I even watched it.

Yeah, So in the first movie, when he goes out and finds the little origami unicorn

outside of his door, that was the cop basically

saying, like, I know your dreams, like their programmed.

Okay.

You're dreaming of a unicorn.

And so that that was that was the nod to

like, that's why it was like, oh, it was a blink and you miss it kind of rug pool at the end there I like, oh, wait.

Yeah.

I blinked.

You'd really be paying attention.

Yeah.

Because wasn't that the whole thing that Decker slept

with that one girl from the first movie and the young woman in

this movie is that daughter of them, right?

Yeah, well, they ended up like running off together.

So Rachel and Deckard were both both replicants.

And they had a replicant child.

And wasn't that the wall?

They replicated a replic.

Yeah, that's what I'm.

That was the whole thing, right?

Yeah.

Because they were able to give

Decor as Harrison Ford, right?

Well, and because, and that's kind of what J Lda was saying, right?

It's like, we've been trying to find a way to naturally

breed these things because it's expensive to bioineer them.

But during her scene, the director kind of directed her

to mimic what Davis was doing, but

you know, it's not going to be exact because she's trying to interpret what she did, right?

And so, and then they took the two images and then they,

they put it over each other and they had the transparency to it.

So I thought it was really cool the way they did it.

So I thought that was great And that was my favorite.

I like how like, they have these technological gimmicks, but like, it's not really a gimmick.

Like they work it into the story well.

And like, it's not just like, oh, let's just do this futuristic thing for the sake of doing a futuristic thing.

The fight scene between Kay and Rick Decker nicknamed

the Hologram Funhouse

by the crew was the most difficult sequence to edit because

it involved two fighting actors, many dancing holograms,

and their movements had to match up between shots. many of

editing many of editing, thought

it looked too much like a variety act and the scene was nearly

deleted altogether until editor Joe Rocker

reced as a tense manh, deleting the music and most of the shots of holograms.

Shots of dead or broken holograms and their faltering sounds were

kept in as much as possible to add to the tension of that scene.

I thought that was such a great scene, though.

they were able to rectify that because that entire sequence was fantastic.

And they had all these different they had hired all these actors.

It was a really cool, really, like well done thing.

And they spent a lot of money on that

just to promote the film.

And it flopped in the theaters.

at Comic-Con didn't wasn't able to get into it.

And you were inspired by Gary V and you're like, I want to do something similar to that.

to share anything about the 100th, about the show in general?

I mean, Well, I also props to you, Adrian, for a lot

of your your technical expertpertise and prowess and

being adventurous enough to do YouTube shorts and delve into TikTok.

I'm not waiting in that water, but tip

of the hat to you, buddy.rian, I do want to say,

you've really grown as a host.

And I remember, I say this with all sincerity because I remember

in during our previous podcast,

you didn't like to talk.

You would kind of host and you would try to like, um.

Rip off a Tim.

Well, not even that.

Even when Tim Tim was gone, you would like sort

of instigate sort of questions and kind of like get us to like talk

But you never really told any of your own stories and now we can't get you to shut up.

That is true.

And then, God, that's been, it's been since 2010, 2011, when we started the port decision.

So, yeah, a lot of growth in 10 years.

A lot of change in 10 years.

I mean, we've all grown and changed a lot.

We've

we've all witnessed each other, go through a lot of heartship.

And I think that's the beautiful thing about this podcast is like

it's allowed us to remain connected in a way

that, you know, we're able to see past each other's flaws

and, like embrace

each other's flaws for being,

you know, that just that.

They're just flaws.

That't like make you that, that doesn't define you, you know?

Absolutely.

And I appreciate it.

It's fun.

Like, I love doing this.

Like, I think I've said this before.

I've said this off air above all the things that I've

I really enjoy this movie.

I think it's a beautiful food. flick, why it was a

bomb at the box office, I think, is strictly because of when

it was released in such a packed year.

I think this movie will stand the test of time.

It is a great movie and just one of

Denny Vinois's great catalog.

So I give it a solid four.

I think the philosophical principles that it's touching on just

kind of perfectly encapsulate Philip K. Dick's writings and

that idea of technology in man and what it is to be

human and where personhood falls in that scope

and so. it's, I think it's a very well done movie.

And what's your letterbox rating?

Four out of five.

Yeah, you know what?

I think I just started it at the wrong time.

It was a little late, so that's on me.

I could see that if I rewatched this, I'm going to appreciate it more as just one of those movies.

I didn't know the runtime was that long.

I think it was almost two o'clock when I turned it off, and that's why I was kind of nodding off.

So I need to re-watch this, but for what it is and what I did

catch, and, you know, when I was awake, it was like, it was really good and it was visually stimulating.

Awesome story. neo noir sci-fi detective story at its best, right?

Like, I think it was really good and I can't wait to rewatch it earlier so I can actually

enjoy it for what it is.

But even with that, I would give this a 3.5.

I'm going to give the movie four and a half out of five.

I love this film.

I still love the original, so much more in

its own way, but there are two separate movies,

you know, with the same, you know, theming and

you know, story arc and things like that.

I recommend that

you definitely, if you're going to watch 2049, at least

do yourself a service and watch the original Blade Runner as well.

I know these two movies can kind of stand on their own two feet by themselves.

But honestly, to appreciate where something comes

from, definitely check out the original Blade Runner.

And Harrison Ford's amazing in that movie.

I'm not going to lie.

I mean, not that he wasn't in this, but, you know, you can

definitely, even Harrison Ford has like really good acting chops too,

when he's given a role that he can

do that in.

But yeah.

Beautiful scenery,

beautiful directing, beautiful writing.

Everything about it was amazing.

I love this film.

To me, they are

the original and this film are very

similar in the sense that like they

definitely tell a very rich story.

They both have characters that have

complexity and the

actors that portray all the

roles in both films are absolutely very well cast.

This one, I give it the same

rating as I did Blade Runner.

I gave it a four, so I give 2049 a four.

And yeah, I really enjoyed it for like,

like just like Justin, for also for different reasons as well.

I think

this is such a, I like the

action sequences in this film a little bit more, maybe.

Although I will say that

in both films, they really like putting people's heads through walls

And, yeah,

first 28 minutes of the movie about three times

And I Justin said, that's like the first scene of the movie.

I't uh, I I needed to start earlier.

I got to start earlier on some of these things.

But, um, you know, just, just life, just busy,

uh, uh, but I You can just start doing what Adrian doesn' watching the movies on his phone.

You know what?

I really thought about doing that.

Oh, man, I would go nuts.

So, I mean, it

was a little bit of a slow draw,

but, I mean, I am a fan of a lot of sci-fi movies.

I got a lot of a little bit of a matrix vibe,

one of my all-time favorite movies

And, you know, just getting into

that world and that whole story

about it, I just thought how, you know, this was really interesting, especially now after talking about

you know, this is like the sequel of Blade Runner, which when

I looked it up, I was like, what, 1982, I got to check this out just

to kind of, you know, compare and

get a little bit more of a black, a background.

you know, because of like, you know, the whole blackout and all that that.

Right, right.

Blacked out. painted a better picture

of of the story of the whole lore and all that.

I thought that, so the

movie itself, my letterbox, I'd give it I'd give it a four.

And I feel like

that, you know, a lot of times times after the discussion,

you know, I go into it with with a lower score and it goes higher.

But I feel like, you know, if I watch the original

Blade Runner that maybe it'll boost it up

I think you should.

It's a good movie.

Yeah.

I thought it was a great movie.

I love the cast.

Yeah, overall, I definitely re-watch it again.

And so, um, yeah, looking forward to that when

I have a, make it a little bit more time, and watch it all the way through.

Maybe I'll watch it with my wife because she didn't get to finish it.
